This page explains what happens to your information if you join our list. In short: we collect your email address so we can write to you, it is held by Substack, which sends our newsletter, we never sell or share it, and you can leave at any time.

Who we are

This site is run by Tojiya Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales, based in London. For anything about your data, or anything else, write to hello@tojiya.co.uk. In data-protection terms, Tojiya Ltd is the "controller" of the information described here.

What we collect, and why

If you subscribe to our newsletter, we receive your email address and the date you joined. We use it for one purpose: to send you occasional letters about Japanese bathing and the makers we are meeting, and to let you know when the house opens. Nothing more.

We do not collect your name, we do not track your browsing, we run no advertising, and we do not build a profile of you. If you simply read the page without signing up, we do not collect anything that identifies you.

The lawful basis

We rely on your consent. You give it by choosing to type your address and submit the form, and you can withdraw it whenever you like by unsubscribing or by writing to us. Withdrawing consent is as easy as giving it.

Where your address is held

Our newsletter runs on Substack. When you subscribe, you do so on Substack's own page, and Substack stores the list and sends the letters. Substack also handles its own account and reader data under its privacy policy.

This website is hosted by Netlify. It no longer collects email addresses itself. Addresses given through the old sign-up form have been moved to Substack.

Both are established providers used under their own data-protection terms. Some of their servers may be outside the UK; where that is so, the transfer is covered by the safeguards those providers put in place. We do not pass your address to anyone else.

How long we keep it

We keep your address for as long as you want to hear from us. If you unsubscribe, or ask us to remove you, it is removed from the list. If the project does not go ahead, we delete the list.

Your rights

Under UK data-protection law you can ask us to show you the information we hold about you, correct it, delete it, or stop using it. To do any of these, write to hello@tojiya.co.uk and we will act on it. If you are ever unhappy with how we have handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office, the UK regulator, at ico.org.uk.

Changes to this page

As the business grows this notice will grow with it, for instance when the shop opens and we begin taking orders. When it changes in a way that matters, we will update the date at the top.
